Benefits of GPS tracking devices

What people actually use them for, once the device is on the vehicle.

Real-time location

A car GPS tracker shows where a vehicle sits right now. Live movement appears in the mobile app on iOS and Android, without delays or guesswork.

Theft prevention

Unexpected movement triggers instant awareness. A push notification arrives when a vehicle moves without permission, which supports a faster response and a better chance of recovery.

Asset tracking

Tracking extends well beyond vehicles to trailers, generators and jobsite equipment. Flexible magnetic placement helps reduce loss on the things that are easiest to walk away with.

Fleet management

Fleet tracking adds structure to daily operations. Managers gain insight into routes and driving habits across every vehicle, which supports efficiency and smarter long-term decisions.

Driver awareness

Teen drivers and older relatives stay connected without constant check-ins. Live updates provide reassurance during daily trips while keeping a comfortable level of awareness.

Alert options

Custom alerts fire when movement or boundaries change. Email and SMS notifications arrive through the free mobile app, so you always know where your vehicles or equipment are.

Answered before you add to cart

The things people ask us on the phone before they order.

Is there a monthly fee?

For real time tracking, yes - on ours and on everyone else's. The location travels over a cellular network and that network bills. SpaceHawk runs $9.95/mo on a two-year prepay or $19.95 month to month, with no contract and no termination fee.

If you would rather not have a monthly bill at all, the No Monthly Fee GPS is $249.95 with a full year of tracking included.

Will it work on my vehicle?

Any vehicle. Nothing plugs in, so a 2004 pickup works exactly like a new SUV. The magnet holds to anything metal - wheel wells, frame rails, trailer tongues. Where you would rather not trust a magnet, the Hardwire Kit wires it in permanently.

Mini or Vehicle — what's the difference?

The hardware is close. Pick the Mini when the thing you are tracking has no power and sits still for weeks: trailers, generators, ATVs, jobsite equipment. Pick the Vehicle tracker when something is driven daily and you want speed and geofence alerts on a driver.

Still unsure? Most people start with the Mini.

Is a GPS tracker legal?

Buying and owning one is. Tracking a vehicle you own, or a fleet vehicle your business owns, is generally lawful. Putting a tracker on a vehicle you do not own without consent can be a criminal offense in many states, so check your state's law first.

Tracking 5 or more? Don't buy off this page.

Volume pricing, hardware that survives a jobsite, and someone who answers the phone. Tell us how many vehicles or assets you run and we send real numbers the same business day.

More about GPS tracking devices

The long version, for anyone who wants it before they buy.

What a GPS tracking device actually does

A GPS tracking device is a small unit that reads its position from satellites and sends that position to your phone over a cellular network. You watch a vehicle or an asset move live, replay where it has been, and get an alert when it speeds or crosses a boundary you drew on the map.

It works the same on a car, a fleet van, a trailer or a piece of construction equipment. There is no wiring and no installer, which is the part most people do not believe until they try it.

How to choose between devices

Start with the monthly cost, not the sticker price

Some trackers cost less up front and bill monthly. Others cost more once and include the service. Neither is wrong — work out which shape of bill you would rather live with, then compare hardware.

Match the features to the real job

More features do not mean better results. A tracker for an elderly parent might want an SOS button; that same button is dead weight on a trailer. Buy for the job in front of you.

  • Tracking something parked for weeks? Battery life in standby matters most.
  • Tracking a daily driver? Update rate and speed alerts matter most.
  • Tracking a fleet? Reporting and one login for every vehicle matter most.
Where to mount a tracker

The magnet does the work on any metal surface. Popular spots are inside the rear bumper, a wheel well, along a frame rail or on the undercarriage. Inside the vehicle works just as well - glove box, under a seat, in the trunk - because GPS signals pass straight through plastic, glass and fiberglass.

The only real mistake is burying the device under solid metal. The magnet holds at highway speed and over rough roads, so it stays where you put it.

GPS tracker vs AirTag

An AirTag has no GPS chip and no SIM card. It reports only when it passes a stranger's iPhone, which is why keys come back and cars do not. On an empty road at 2am there are no Apple devices nearby and the tag goes dark.

A GPS tracker carries its own GPS module and cellular modem, so it reports from anywhere it has coverage. Use a tag for keys around the house. Use a GPS tracker for anything that leaves the driveway.
